Although pantomime is my least favourite form of theatrical entertainment I was won over twice this year by the ones at York Theatre Royal. I caught the end of last season's in early January and saw this year's on Boxing Day - both were terrific. The sets, costumes and cast were outstanding and the usual pantomime set pieces were done in innovative ways. Playing Dame for the 6th time at York and aleady booked in for 2026 was the magnificent Robin Simpson. (Full disclosure: he is married to my niece but if you don't believe my opinion, see his rave reviews!)
In London I thoroughy enjoyed Why Am I So Single and Benjamin Button but found it difficult to hear the lyrics in Hadestown. At the Royal Exchange I was unexpectedly impressed by Spend, Spend, Spend and surprisingly disappointed with Singin' in the Rain which I thought was miscast. Turkey of the year was Now That's What I Call A Musical - which I don't! Even as a 'juke box' musical it failed - not even Sonia could save it.
For some time I have I have not been back to what was once my favourite theatre: Blackpool Grand. But this autumn I was attracted by four shows including Carlos Acosta's Nutcracker in Havana which was, for me, the highlight of the year; the dancing was amazing. It was also excellent in Speakeasy which featured Strictly's Karen & Gorka plus an assortment of fine dancers, singers and musicians.
Both Jimmy Cricket and I celebrated our 80th birthdays this year but he did it in style inviting his family and comedian friends to do a show at the Lowry Quays - and what a heartwarming evening it was. Jimmy is a lovely, funny man as I know from having performed as an extra with him in his musical Maloney's Big Moment at Blackburn Empire in 2013. The top guest was the hilarious Tim Vine.
